La Chandeleur

La Chandeleur (Candlemas) traditionally celebrated to mark the end of winter and the return of spring, and in religious context as the last feast of the Christmas season, is also known as the day of crepes. As a fertility rite, people make crepes, the roundness and golden colour of which symbolises sun, and not to mention the popular belief that if you can hold a coin in one hand and can flip a crepe with the other, you will be prosperous through out the year.

The Chandeleur celebration took place this week at école cooperative. The preparation started with the teacher giving the children a printed crepe recipe. They learned the recipe and were prepared to make crepes. The day before the celebration, they made a grocery shopping list for buying the crepe essentials.

A field trip was planned to take the children grocery shopping to the nearby supermarket. With the list in hand the children embarked on a shopping adventure, manoeuvering the aisles of the supermarket like pros, picking up cans of milk, flour, eggs and strawberry jam.

With the shopping done, it was time to make the crepes. As per the recipe, the little chefs measured their ingredients and prepared the crepe batter, with little help from adults. They even aced the egg cracking, much to the surprise of adults.

And finally it was time to make the crepes and eat them😊 Bon appetit!!!

Our thanks to the children’s parents who had volunteered to assist in the process.

Matisse’s final self portrait

A testimony to Matisse’s dedication and love for art. When his health prevented him from painting, he resorted to the aid of cut paper collage to express himself. And it is the ideal way for the children to learn about Matisse.

The teacher and the children had been working on the artwork for days now. The base layers were individually painted on and pasted. Colour papers and printed papers were used for the overlapping layers.

For your eyes our children’s take on Matisse’s final self-portrait “the sorrows of the king”

Art is to express yourself

This Wednesday’s art workshop was on the classic blow painting technique. To blow diluted paint with a plastic straw to let it spread and form patterns. To put it more lyrically, to make the paint dance to your music. This technique is something kids love to use.

But art is about expressing oneself.

So, when a child wants to sprinkle liquid paint all over the paper to create more of a splatter effect, who am I to say no? And when the end result looks brilliant like a constellation, it is better than what you set out to do.

In the end, when I made a collage out of the artworks of all the kids, I was quite pleased with the result. It was all different techniques and different patterns, but the idea is, as I said to express oneself.

It is a collage of diversity- diversity of thought and technique!

Spring trees and Autumn trees

At last Wednesday’s art workshop, the kids painted ‘Spring trees and Autumn trees’ with leaves collected from outdoors. After a refreshing walk and foraging for leaves in the neighbourhood park the kids were excited to create the artwork.

They proceeded to paint the leaves with spring and autumn colours. Then they made imprints of them on paper. They were not deterred by their messy hands or the mess on the floor, until a little accident took place. A child accidentally spilled water all over the painting. Oh la la!

But, no worries. Despite the little mishap, the painting was salvaged with some presence of mind and a little creativity.

Christmas Spectacle

The halls of école cooperative were filled with the spirit of Christmas today as we celebrated the birth of Christ with a brilliant spectacle by the children. The audience was the parents.

The parents first took a tour around the halls and classrooms which were decorated for Christmas by the children. They had a small breakfast as the children got ready for their performances. There was plenty of excitement, a bit of nerves and of course lots of Christmas magic!

The spectacle started with a short play based on the children’s book ‘le gros navet’ (the big turnip). Two kids played an elderly couple, and the others played different animals who would help the couple with harvesting a giant turnip. The play was humorous and was enjoyed greatly by both the audience and the actors.

Then it was time for some dancing! The children looked smart in their hats as they danced lively to the ‘Dans le port de Tacoma’. At the last minute, the teacher had to step in, as one child’s partner was unable to come. Well, anything is possible in the life of a teacher!

After the dance, the singing began…

When the children sang ‘the brown bear, brown bear what do you see?’ song, some of them took their respective animal characters quite seriously and dressed up in animal costumes. But the credit goes solely to the children’s parents and grandparents, who had put in a lot of effort for the costumes- especially for the mask and wings for the red bird and the tail for the blue horse. Thank you, parents!

The English song was followed by the French song ‘ma foret’ by Henri Dès. But no Christmas Spectacle would be complete without Christmas carols. The school halls reverberated with a spirited rendition of ‘vive le vent’ and ‘Jingle bells’ by the children.

Thus, came to an end the Christmas spectacle, after days of rehearsals and anticipation. Now it is time to look forward to the festival itself… école cooperative takes this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Visit to an exhibition on ‘Children’s Rights’

The exhibition on ‘Children’s Rights’ by the townhall of Boulogne Billancourt was a great opportunity for children and adults alike to learn about the various rights children have.

From the most basic ones like- the right to safety, health, education, freedom to the ones more relevant to the present like- the right to an unpolluted earth, a fair and just society, non-discrimination and equal opportunity.

Children are entitled to information. They also have the right to form and express their opinion, which sometimes adults tend to forget.

As advanced societies continue to broaden the scope of children’s rights, it is very unfortunate that there are places in the world where children must fight and struggle for their basic rights.

The exhibition also featured impressive art works by children. As countries struggle to cope with the enormous amount of waste generated each day, the children inspired us with their artwork made from used articles like plastic bottles, cans and wastepaper; to learn to reduce, reuse and recycle.

We thank the town-hall for having organised this exhibition which served as an eye opener for our children and for us.

The cooperative tree of the school

The cooperative tree of the school finally came to fruition. In other words, the kids at last finished the tree they had been painting for days.

Although it was inspired from a model the maitrise found for them, the result turned out to be somewhat original and abstract. They took a bit of artistic liberty, may be a lot, but you know what… creativity should not be contained:)

Voila! The tree of école cooperative…
